Group unlocked waterways modern-day potential 11th September, 2014 Source - Back in the 1990s, a group of hydro-enthusiasts decided it was time to do something “useful” with the water released from an Erie Canal lock in Pittsford. The result was the Lock 32 Whitewater Kayaking Park off Clover Street. The spillway — a passage for the surplus water — was transformed into a playground for advanced kayakers. Genesee Waterways Center, a not-for-profit organization that promotes water-related activities, built the park, which opened in 2000. It includes a “flat-water” area for beginner kayakers. The white-water area is limited to those with more expertise. “You are going to flip your boat. That’s part of (the appeal),” said Cindy Stachowski, the center’s executive director. “If you can’t roll your kayak, you’d better know how to do a ‘wet exit.’ ” Click here to access the full story
